Bruce Stewart, former chief designer of Note Printing Australia (he would later do the $100.00 as well). The $5.00 note is the first in the plastic (polymer) note series. This note was later changed due to confusion with the polymer $10.00 note released the following year. In 1995 the colour of the $5.00 was made a brighter purple.

An important aspect of the design were new security features consisting of;
transparent area printed with stylised image; micro printed denomination; seven pointed star composed from both sides of the note; 'watermark' coat of arms; intricate combination of flat background superimposed with raised printing.
