The garments are based on similar garments designed and made by Kate Brooks as part of her Higher School Certificate major art work in 1993. They were made for Kate's father and his partner and were worn by them at the 1994 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
A Powerhouse Museum staff member saw these waistcoats being worn by a pair of party-goers at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1994. Contact was made with the maker, Ms Kate Brooks, and she was asked to donate them to the Powerhouse Museum collection. This she graciously did.

Two men's open waistcoats, the work being entitled 'A safe night out', made of black vinyl lined with black cotton fabric, and completely oversewn with rows of condoms in their gold-coloured sachets, with metal eyelets and leather thonging as fastening.
