Artwork, "Suitcase of hope, books of empty words", wood / fabric / paper, Rea, Australia, 1994
A mixed media installation arranged in a corner with, in ascending order: a closed, upright suitcase labelled "Cootamundra Girls Home" on which are placed a closed bible and a pair of white gloves; above, resting on a plinth is an open suitcase filled with and surrounded by religous books and pamphlets, its inside lid covered with photocopied family portraits of the artist's grandmother wearing a domestic servant's uniform; behind the open suitcase, diagonal to the wall, leans a wooden cross; two hand-lettered, paper ribbons hang above and across the collection bearing statements about the impact of christianity and colonisation.
