Object statement
Illustration, 'La vitesse de Pompiers' (the speed of the firemen), ink on paper, signed Gerys Despaux, France, 1870-1900
Artist Gerys Despaux. Possibly a caricature.
The Jandaschewsky family collection was kept together by the last remaining family member, Arthur 'Jandy' Jandaschewsky. During the last years of his life 'Jandy' sold the collection to his friend John Anastasiadis. Mr Anastasiadis kept the collection for a 25 year period, having built a repository for housing and exhibiting it at his own home. In 1994 he sold the collection to the MAAS in order to keep it together, and in New South Wales, according to 'Jandy's' wishes.

Description
Illustration, 'La vitesse de Pompiers'(trans: the speed of the firemen), ink on paper, signed Gerys Despaux, France, 1870-1900.
Vertical format illustration in black ink on paper, crease mark from horizontal fold in centre of page, title at upper edge of page, signature of artist in lower right corner. Illustration depicts man in uniform, probably a fireman, carrying several bags over his shoulders and in his hands. Left section of illustration has been torn off obscuring section of the title "... enir de", possibly the whole title "in memory of the speed of the firemen", suggesting the piece is a caricature.
