Object statement
Dress, pleated, polyester, designed by Issey Miyake, made by Miyake Design Studio, Japan, 1995
Issey Miyake launched his 'Pleats Please' collection in the late 1980s. Since that time his pleated collection has been hailed by the high fashion industry and has also influenced popular fashion in a significant manner. The Museum currently has three Miyake objects in its collection, two of these are from earlier periods, and the 'dinosaur jacket,' an independent garment which was not acquired as part of an ensemble. The jacket reflects the influence of Japanese ideas and aesthetic on Miyake's design, in particular an awareness of the tension between two and three dimensions, and an interest in paper folding or origami. The 'lantern dress' also reflects these interests in solid and void, 2 and 3 dimensions and in this case a paper folded lantern in an extremely striking manner. It is a significant example of Miyake's design which represents a key fashion trend for the first half of the '90s.This dress was made by the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo, Japan. It was made for the Spring/Summer collection 1995, which was launched in Paris October 1994.
