Object statement
Spacesuit, Soyuz TM-10, nylon, canvas/rubberised fabric/plastic/metal, Zvezda, Moscow, USSR, [1989]
This suit was worn by Cosmonaut Gennadi Manakov during liftoff, landing, docking and other hazardous manoeuvres on the Soyuz TM-10 space mission. Launched 1 August 1990, it returned to Earth 10 December 1990. Manakov was the mission commander, with Gennadi Strikalov, the flight engineer. The Soyuz TM-10 spacecraft docked with the Mir space station, where the cosmonauts spent four months conducting scientific experiments, before being joined by a relief crew, including the first journalist in space, Japan's Toyohiro Akiyama. Akiyama returned to Earth with the Soyuz TM-10 crew. Manakov was a Lt Colonel in the Soviet Air Force at the time of his flight. The Soyuz TM-10 mission was his first space flight.
