Object statement
Bed hangings (set of 9), wedding, embroidered silk/metallic thread/cotton/glass, Shanghai region, China, 1900-1949.
Probably Shanghai China.
Marriages are one of the most important rites of passage for Chinese people and little expense was spared in the preparations for the marriage day. In the past, much of traditional Chinese life, particularay in rural China, was governed by superstitious beliefs. Ornament and pattern applied to functional and ceremonial objects is generally imbued with potent meaning informed by literary illusions, historical and mythical incident and a play upon the sound and meanings of words. The accoutrements of a wedding ceremony are among the most lavishily decorated folk objects. The symbolism is particularly rich as evidenced by the wealth of imagery contained within these hangings.
Collected by Kate McLean in Shanghai China. Kate McLean lived in Hong Kong for 2.5 years 1970-1973 and in China for 12.5 years 1973-1993.
