Teapot, porcelain, overglaze blue enamel and applied gilding in Japonisme style, Royal Worcester Porcelain Company Limited, England, 1878
Teapot with a square body on four small feet and a handle in the shape of a dragon. The dragon handle arches over the teapot then the head extends into the spout with the animal's open mouth as the opening of the teapot. Lid with small knop. The body of the teapot is black with blue transfer printed designs of foliage outlined in gilt, also gilt birds and a butterfly. The dragon is in gilt and olive brown. Maker's mark under base.
Marks
Under base, maker's marks, stamped in purple on glaze, a circle bordered inside with four 'W's around a 'C51'. The circle is surmounted with a crown and below an 'N'. Also under base, an applied diamond of ceramic surmounted with 'IV' and inside the diamond '18 / G / R / I / C'. Under base, stamped in clay 'SW'. Under base, handwritten in gilt 'SW'. The lid also bears the maker's purple stamp and gilt letters, also a white paper sticker printed in blue 'THE WORCESTER / ROYAL PORCELAIN WORKS / NO. 8 / P.'.
