Object statement
Colour transparency and photographic print, Janice Wakely stepping off a rickshaw, Hall Ludlow dress design, Everglaze fabric, photograph by Henry Talbot, Hong Kong, 1960, photographic print, Sydney New South Wales, Australia, 1996
Original colour transparency and later photographic print, showing Janice Wakely, a leading Australian model who met German-emigre fashion photographers like Gerd Rosskamp, Helmut Newton, Henry Talbot and others while she was working in Melbourne during the 1950s. At this time, Melbourne was the centre of Australian post WWII fashion design and manufacturing.
Captured on the cusp of two decades in 1960, the image demonstrates the maturing of the local fashion, modelling and photography scene when Australian designed clothes using imported fabrics, could be shot overseas on Australian models by Australian fashion photographers, and then marketed back to local consumers as ideal wear for travelling abroad to exotic locations like Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and Japan.
The Powerhouse Museum library holds a copy of the magazine in which Talbot's 1960s Hong Kong images were published.
