Object statement
Flute, Meyer/Pratten system, wood / ivory / silver made by Boosey & Co, London, England, 1900-1925
Although the headjoint is marked Meyer System. The Meyer System was often a generic term used to describe a simple flute system. This flute appears to incorporate features from Siccama's flute system, the addition of keys for finger extensions on A and E holes. The headjoint is quite standard in German appearance, while the body is marked Boosey & Co and is English in appearance. The body matches the Pratten Cone flute from the Boosey & Co. (see Toff p.111). Although the ivory headjoint is in modern terms quite unusual and rare in the nineteenth century it was very common as material for the flute, especially the headjoints or mouth plates. many anonymous German made nineteenth century flutes and piccolos feature ivory headjoints or lip-plates testifying to the common availability of ivory at this time.
