Object statement
Cable, telegraph, transpacific, brass mounted, 1870-1905
Based on period H C Russell was Government Astronomer.
According to family history, the cable was given to H C Russell, the NSW Government Astronomer, by the captain of the of the ship which laid the first cable across the Pacific from Australia to the United States. It has remained with Russell's descendants. The donor is a great-grandson.

Description
Cable, telegraph, transpacific, brass mounted, 1870-1905
Piece of cable with brass rings of 10 mm width on both ends. There is an inner core made up of a 7-stranded copper conductor. This is surrounded by dark insulating materials including gutta-percha. As well there is an armouring of 10 outer wires.
