Object statement
Baseball cap, 'Wedd Check', screenprinted cotton / plastic, designed by Gerry Wedd, made by Mambo Graphics, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1992
The cap is significant in terms of its design and cultural meaning. Mambo is a Sydney based company which produces graphics, screen printed fabrics and a range of clothing. Characterised by bright colours, quirky imagery and an irreverent sense of humour, the Mambo style uses the imagery of popular culture and parodies aspects of the Australian landscape and way of life. Although Mambo started in 1985 as a small alternative surf clothing label aimed at the radical young, Mambo clothing is now sold successfully in Australia and overseas and during 1992 has had a particularly pervasive impact on the youth fashion market.
The 'Wedd Check' was designed by Gerry Wedd and the cap made by Mambo Graphics in Sydney, Australia in 1992.
The outfit was put together by Dare Jennings, Managing Director of Mambo for 1992 Fashion of the Year awards.
