The original stockbook entry states "Old Persian Blue & White Vase, 17th Century". This attribution was revised in 1983 to say that the vase was most probably made in Damascus, Syria, Mamluk period, 15th century. Another revision in 1999 says that this is an olive oil jar, probably made in North Central Persia in the 18th century.

Retailed by William Morris & Co, London. Purchased by Sir John Sulman and presented to the NSW Applied Arts Trust in 1927.

Description
Vase or olive oil jar and stand, earthenware/wood, blue and white, Islamic motifs, Damascus, Syria or North Central Persia, 15th-18th century

Vase, thickly potted buff earthenware, of elongated ovoid form with an undercut base with splayed basal rim and a thick ring lip ; decorated on the exterior body with Islamic motifs in imitation of Ming blue and white with the decoration loosely painted in cobalt-blue over a white slip under a glassy transparent glaze: there are four quatrefoil arabesque medallions enclosing flower sprays and foliate motifs spaced between the panels, above these a narrow band of chevrons and a scrolling band at the shoulder ; the interior is partially glazed and the underside is unglazed. With a low wooden display stand of plain appearance.
