Sleeve panels (2), embroidered, silk on cotton, Miao people, Guizhou Province, China, [1930 - 1970]
These two embroidered panels originally forming part of the sleeves of two festival jackets relate to the collection of Chinese Miao festival jackets in the museum's collection. The panels are also from the Hu Zijia collection, which is the origin of those in the museum's collection. Miao festival jackets are recognised as among the most intricately embroidered of non Han and non Manchu-Qing traditional Chinese dress. These panels were purchased by Yasuko Myer and subsequently donated to the museum.
Made in Guizhou, China
Purchased by Yasuko Myer from the Hu Zijia collection exhibition at David Ho Gallery, Paddington, 1990.

Two embroidered panels, originally forming parts of sleeves of festival jackets made and worn by women of Miao ethnicity from Guizhou Province, China.

Panel: the embroidered panel in polychrome silk threads on an indigo ground, depicts a figure with a sword fighting off a large dragon. The panel is sewn onto an indigo dyed cotton backing.

Panel: the embroidered panel in polychrome silk threads on an indigo ground, depicts butterflies, bats, dragons, centipedes and figures. The panel is sewn to an indigo dyed cotton backing.
