Photograph, black and white silver gelatin print, 'Young boy wearing a Mongolian hat', by Hedda Morrison, Peking, China, 1933-1946
This style of winter hat was known in Old Peking as a 'Tibetan hat'. In Tibetan areas it was called a 'golden-flower hat' and was thought to originate from the Han Chinese regions.
This is one of a large number of photographs that were taken by Hedda Morrison (1908-1991) during her years of residence in Peking (Beijing), China 1933-1946.
Reproduced in Hedda Morrison, 'A photographer in Old Peking'. Hong Kong, Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 1985, p. 98, with the caption 'Boy in a Mongolian hat. This was a common and very necessary form of headwear in the bitter cold of the north China winter'.
