Rank badge, wild goose insignia, silk/metallic thread, counted thread embroidery, China, c. 1875. Square panel of silk gauze mesh, worked in silk counted thread (petit point) in shades of blue, white with some green, purple and red. Central image of wild goose standing with its wings outstretched. It is worked separately in blue, yellow, black and gold metallic thread and is applied to the panel over an unpicked area of ground which previously bore a silver pheasant (of the 5th order). Bird stands on a central rock, with waves below. A red disc represents the sun in the upper left corner. Geometrically patterned sky with scroll clouds. Arranged in a circle around the bird, the eight buddhist emblems of good fortune. Black border around edge, worked with alternating fu bats and shou characters. Lined with blue silk. Badge intended to be worn on the back of a robe and represents the 4th rank civil official.
