Computer hardware, Data General Dasher D2 computer terminal, plastic /metal /electronic components, Data General Corp, USA, 1977
The Data General Dasher (D2) computer terminal is a monochrome cathode ray tube (CRT) designed for use with Data General mini computers like the Nova. The D2 is also referred to as a dumb terminal or computer monitor. It is a device used in the interface between people and computers where the text input of instructions and the text output of computations are made.
CRTs were first applied to use with computer systems as memory devices with the first generation computers (Williams tubes). At that time instructions and results (interface) from computers were made through electric typewriters. The earliest use of CRTs with type character control was around 1964 when IBM produced their 2260 Display Station however most computers continued to use hardcopy computer terminals into the 1970s. By the mid 1970s CRT computer communication interfaces had become more accessible (cheaper).
CRTs offered many advantages over the previous technologies. They did not use paper and ink and made less noise. They also permitted the editing of instructions on screen as the cursor could be repositioned to any part of the screen to erase and change information. Multiple fonts, color and graphics were also available.
The D2's design enables the rotation and pitching of the screen housing over a wide field through a centre axis points both vertical and horizontal. This type of design facilitates effortless adjustment as the D2 is balanced.
The D2 was designed, engineered and assembled by Data General.
Manufactured by Data General, USA.
