Crock, earthenware, William Grenfell, South Australia, 1849-1878
Large crock, red earthenware, the ovoid almost barrel-shaped vessel with a flat base with extending basal rim, a relatively narrow lower body and full swollen sides at upper mid-body then narrowing towards the wide mouth with thick and rounded everted rim, two horse-shoe shaped lug handles applied to upper body below the rim ; lead glazed with exterior with a glossy yellow flecked dark brown (iron-stained slip) glaze to upper and mid-body with the glaze falling quite short of the base revealing the red clay body, interior clear glazed over a white clay slip giving the interior a yellow tinge.
