Jardinieres, (2), pair, 'Palaceware', terracotta, designed and decorated by Stephen Bowers on a form made by Mark Heidenreich, Sydney, 1989
The forms were wheel thrown by Mark Heidenreich at the Pump and Crank Pottery in Sydney from terracotta clay fired at 1150 degrees c. Decorated by Stephen Bowers.
Stephen and Mark said about the jardinieres ' We made these pots to explore the architectural possibilities for pottery, particularly pots of this size. But they contain visual references to pottery traditions. Classical Italian ceramics forms have been given a new twist by using familiar Australian foliage for decoration. And we have treated the surface of the clay to make it look like marble and sandstone.
