Shawl or wedding veil, bobbin made lace, linen/cotton, unknown maker, [Bayeaux], France, 1830-1850
This shawl was made in France, probably in Bayeaux, sometime between 1830-1850.
Given to the Lace Guild (donor) by Mrs Roma Bashford in 1983 who was a founding and a committee member.

Description
Shawl or wedding veil, bobbin made lace, linen/cotton, unknown maker, [Bayeaux], France, 1830-1850.

Square shawl or wedding veil made of white cotton or linen bobbin lace. Hexagonal [tulle] mesh ground decorated with rows of small leaf motifs, wide border band features sprays of large [passion] flowers with individual, repeating flower heads forming the serrated border edge. Worked by the continuous lace method in strips appox. 150mm wide which are joined with an invisible joining stitch. The work of serveral different people is apparent in this piece.
