Object statement
Tile, P & O mural, ceramic, Douglas Annand, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1962-63
This tile is from the same batch of tiles which Annand used for his mural in the foyer of the 1963 P&O-Orient Building, corner of Elizabeth and Hunter Streets, Sydney. This tile was either never used or removed when the mural was moved during a subsequent refurbishment. The mural's current positioning within the P&O foyer is different to its original placement (evident in a photo in the Sydney Morning Herald on 24 January 1964). The bronze plaque in the P&O foyer indicates that "A & J Conservation Services" were commissioned by the owners to conserve the mural; no date is given.

Description
Tile, P & O mural, ceramic, Douglas Annand, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1962-63

Rectangular brick, ceramic tile with impressed and applied decoration, part of a larger mural incorporating maritime themes. Deep blue glaze on top and one side, decoration comprises a fanciful sea creature impressed in colours of brown and green with a small circular head, two floppy ears, two arms, a bulging girth, and tail with two fins. Also included is a green colouring applied above creature's head, and long thin impressed marks near its tail. Tile is off-white in colour, base is raised slightly on side which is glazed, and base centre is uneven, perhaps damaged.
