Marea Gazzard has been an influential ceramic artist in Australia from the late 1950's, consistently making hand build forms, and more interested in eg. Cycladic and pre-Columbian pottery than in other prevailing aesthetics. She was influential in setting up the Crafts Council of Australia, and was the first chair of the Crafts Board of the Australia Council, president of The World Crafts Council and a Trustee of MAAS. Much recent work has been in bronze. She is also represented in the collection by a number of works from her important 1973 exhibition 'Clay + Fibre'.
