Jar, stoneware, Koster's Premier Pottery, South Australia, 1888-1900
Large storage jar, with cover, stoneware, wheel-thrown, four gallons capacity, the tall cylindrical container with a flat base, straight sides and a narrow angled shoulder which tapers to a short everted neck with thick lipped rim, a pair of horseshoe-shaped lug handles set below the shoulder, the wide mouth with a narrow ledge within to support the recessed cover (-2) of low circular form with flattened knop with concave top set in a central indentation ; the jar exterior lead glazed with a two-tone Bristol glaze, the interior is clear glazed (and coated with a flaky white powder residue) and the underside is unglazed, the cover exterior golden Bristol glazed and the flat cover underside is unglazed.

Marks
Makers "PREMIER POTTERY" mark and capacity mark "4 GALS" impressed on the shoulder, capacity mark "4 GALL" impressed on the cover.
