Mat, siapo (bark cloth)/paper/mulberry, Samoa, 1920-1940.
Bark cloth, rectangular, all over rectilinear design arranged in patterned, widthwise bands each comprised of three varying block motifs based upon triangles, diamonds, stripes and chevron bands. Natural 'saipe' ground painted with dark browns and ochre to form a bold geometric design. Narrow border bands on all four sides worked on three edges with alternating light and dark triangles and on fourth side as joined half circle motifs forming an undulating wave.
