Young Blood: Designers Market is a curated market which showcases original design; from fashion to furniture, jewellery to graphic, product and lighting design. Young Blood gives visitors the opportunity to meet the makers and talk about their work. The markets are held at Powerhouse Museum and feature the work of over 40 designers, plus food, refreshments and entertainment. The previous markets held in 2005 and 2006 proved to be a great launching pad for many of designers who benefited greatly from the exposure and lucrative sales.
As a curated market there are a number of things the selection committee is looking for, these include:
The Powerhouse Museum promotes Young Blood through a wide variety of media outlets as well as through our design databases. The April 2007 markets were advertised via postcards distributed throughout Sydney and at the Powerhouse Museum and Powerhouse events, SMH and FBi radio. They featured in multiple listings in Sydney Morning Herald.
Lola & Bailey is a partnership between Cheri Uppal and Theresa Nguyen
established in 2006 out of a yearning to create beautiful and intriguing design
products that are a reflection of the user.
Cheri Uppal and Theresa Nguyen are graduates who met while studying design
at the College of Fine Arts. Both have been working in the commercial design
and advertising world as art directors.
Their first collection embraces their primary passion of jewellery. A commonality
between the two; that has been the drive behind the creation of this label. The
label plans to expand -- to design other products not only jewellery. Embracing
the founders’ training as multi-disciplinary designers.
'Participating in Young Blood Designer Markets was a great opportunity to get our products into the market, interact with consumers and get valuable feedback about our designs. We were able to make invaluable contacts, meet fellow designers and gain exposure as a business. It was a great way to launch our label!'
HIGH TEA WITH MRS WOO is the work of a Chinese-Australian three sister design team - Rowena, Juliana and Angela Foong. Since launching their label in 2004, they have won the 2005 NSW Mercedes Benz Start-Up Awards, the AUSTRADE-POWERHOUSE Market Development Award in 2006 and have exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) and OBJECT Gallery (Sydney). They have shown their work at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Shanghai Fashion Week in China and have been guest speakers for Australian Graphic Design Association, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australian Network of Art and Technology and Craft Australia.
The sisters create women’s wear that blend Western influences with Eastern charm to create unusual and striking designs. They love to bake a good story and throw together unexpected ingredients in their work. Greatly considering the materials they choose, they love the idea that “an intriguing piece of fabric can reveal a great yarn.”
'We have had the honour of being part of the Young Blood Designer Markets adventure since its launch at the 2005 Sydney Design Festival. It has been so rewarding to be amongst this community of makers and designers, and to be able to present our work to such a responsive and supportive audience has been extremely encouraging.'
